Qualcomm Lets Out A Few Details About The Snapdragon 820

Seems like it is in a hurry to make up for lost sales.

 

We all expected the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 to show up early this year, more so, because the 810 flopped so badly.

And while Qualcomm unveiled its plans for a the 820 at the MWC 2015 earlier this year, we did not have any details about the chipset... Until now.

Yes, Qualcomm has finally let out a few details about its upcoming premium offering.

We now know that Qualcomm will not be using any ARM Cortex cores, but will be going in for a couple of custom-made 64-bit Kyro cores instead.

Next up are details about its GPU. It will be an all-new Adreno 530 that will also support Open GL 3.1 and the new Vulcan API. Qualcomm also detailed that the same GPU will not be used in the Snapdragon 618 and the 620. For the latter it will be the Adreno 510.

What is important about this new SoC is what it brings to the table. A 40% bump up in performance and more importantly a 40% cut in power consumption. Part of this significant bump can be attributed to the new manufacturing process, which is expected to be 16 nm from the current 20 nm on the current 810. This along with the heterogeneous design will also help keep thermal problems to a minimum.

With the new GPU, there is the usual focus on 4K content. The new chipset can not only deliver 4K video recording at 60 fps (storage companies better scramble for bigger chips) but even manage 30 fps 4K content wirelessly.

The new Spectra ISP (Image Signal Processing) chip also supports hybrid autofocus, optical zoom and also support for dual cameras with dual focal lengths.

Clearly, just the news of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 arriving early, may be enough to convince many to refrain from buying a flagship smartphone right now.

And while we do have plenty of rumours pointing out that Xiaomi may be the first manufacturer to sport the shiny new chipset in its Mi 5 smartphone, it will still be a long way till we in India will see these handsets showing up in the market. For that matter, LG may be the first to showcase the same like it did with its G Flex 2 this year.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset was clearly a disaster for the company. It not only led to job cuts in the company’s workforce, but even led to Qualcomm losing HTC as a client (all HTC smartphones now feature MediaTek chipsets).
