FB's Java App Now Offers Indian Language Support

Indian users who access Facebook on their mobile phones and wish that they could communicate in their mother-tongue on the social network are in luck. The web service will soon be available in eight different Indian languages including Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, and Marathi, apart from Malay and Vietnamese versions. Facebook for Every Phone is a Java-based app that is said to be compatible with over 3600 phones on 2G and EDGE networks. It will be rolled out completely in the next few weeks. The language settings can be accessed via the app's settings menu. For now though, the app seems to be supporting only Hindi and Marathi. The app is also available at the Nokia Store and GetJar.

Facebook's Country Growth Manager Kevin D'Souza says, "With over 50 million people in India on Facebook, we want to make sure that everyone has a great Facebook mobile experience regardless of the device that they choose to use". FB already allows users to access translated versions of their account, through the main website.

After Yahoo! embracing languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, and Malayalam to provide regional news content, looks like more web portals are trying to establish their stronghold in the country.
