First Common Bird Monitoring System Setup In India
Will enable bird lovers around the country to monitor and protect 18 common species.
After reports about threats of sparrows going on the extinction path surfaced on the World Sparrow Day (celebrated on 20 March every year), the first bird monitoring system in the country was launched, reports IANS. This system has been created by the Mumbai-based Nature Forever Society (NFS), which works towards protecting common sparrows and other common fauna. The setup has been designed by a technical team from Jaypee group.
Based on a website, the system allows users from the entire country to participate in what the founder Mohammed Dilawar terms as a "Citizen-science venture". He says, "After creating a user ID on the system, the user will be able to provide data such as number and types of birds in his or her locality, and from the individual contributions of users across the country, the system will be able to map our geographical distribution of birds. We should have had bird monitoring systems in the country at least 30 years back. In west, there are more than 100-year old bird monitoring programmes".
As of now, this programme takes into account 18 common birds including the House Sparrow, Common Hoopoe, White-throated Kingfisher, Green Bee-eaters, Black Kite, House Crow, and Rose-ringed Parakeet. Here's hoping that the new initiative will help these once-common birds from facing the fate of extinction.
