Saavn Reveals It Has 11 Million Monthly Users

It has also hired former Google India executive Mahesh Narayanan and is looking to cross 100 million monthly users in next few years

India’s Saavn, the music streaming app, has claimed that it has 11 million monthly users and also has hired former Google India executive Mahesh Narayanan to achieve its mark of 100 Million users.

Saavn was one of the first to enter the Indian space of the streaming music and the company had suffered in the recent times when Facebook altered their social algorithm to decrease virality.

In an interview with Techcrunch, Rishi Malhotra, Saavn CEO confirmed that the user base had crossed the 11 million mark. This is the first time that the company has come out in open and revealed a number since it claimed 10.5 monthly million users in Feb 2013, which was before the Facebook changes.

In the same interview Malhotra also said that they were looking to cross the 100 million mark in next few years and this is where the appointment of Narayanan as COO comes in as an important move.

Narayanan has seven years of experience with Google and believes that it is time for mobile entertainment services to surge in the country.

Saavn was one of the first to explore the mobile entertainment services in India and the segment is seeing an influx of new players.

A week ago Rdio too announced that it was launching its services in India. This was an expected move as the company had acquired domestic streaming company Dhingana in 2014.

Meanwhile, Saavn has been performing pretty well and offers more than three million songs from India. It is also approaching 200 million streams per month and according to Techcrunch its activity increased 12 folds over the past 12 months.

On a whole it looks like the more and more players are interested in the country’s mobile entertainment sector and we may see a few international players entering the scene. It is time for the initial entrants to pull up their socks and it looks like this what Saavn is exactly doing.
