ASUS Launches Its PadFone Mini In India At Rs 15,999

The device offers buyers a unique proposition of owning a tablet and a sensible-sized smartphone

Asus has launched its PadFone Mini smartphone-tablet hybrid in India at Rs 15,999. The device is made up of a 4-inch smartphone and a 7-inch dock for the smartphone that essentially transforms it into a tablet. The PadFone Mini runs on Google's Android 4.3 JellyBean software and was announced at CES earlier this year.

At the smartphone end, the PadFone features a 4-inch WVGA (480x800 pixel) display, and is powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor coupled to 1GB of RAM. The device has dual-SIM capabilities, on-board storage of 8GB and supports microSD cards of up to 64GB. At the rear of the device is an 8MP primary camera, while the front features a 2MP shooter.

The tablet dock features a 7-inch WXGA (1280x800 pixel) display, and relies on the phone's internals to power itself. The dock does however pack a 2,100mAh battery (in addition to the phone's rather small 1,170mAh battery) which can charge the phone on-the-go.

Asus has promised to update the PadFone Mini to run on Android 4.4 KitKat in the near future, which is a welcome sign for an affordable device. Further, the PadFone features GPRS/ EDGE, HSPA+, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.0 options for connectivity. However, the phone has to be docked in order to use the device as a tablet.
