Nokia Continues To Reign Supreme

Finnish brand accounted for 31% of handsets shipped in 2011, followed by Samsung and Micromax.

 

A report from CyberMedia Research states that a staggering 183 million mobile phone units were shipped in India in the 2011 alone.  Of these, 18 million units are said to be 3G compliant. While the Android OS seems to be emerging as the preferred smartphone platform among vendors, Nokia has yet managed to retain its pole position with 31% share, despite going the Windows Phone way. Samsung with 15% and Micromax with 5% shipments, round up the top three handset manufacturers for the calendar year 2011. The above figures are inclusive of feature phones, smartphones, and dual-SIM phones. The year saw a launch 150 phone model by over 30 vendors.

While feature phones saw a measly 7% sales growth, smartphone shipments grew a whopping 87% in 2011. Considering that Nokia has come out with several dual-SIM handsets of late, and the Finnish brand swept away its competitors with a 13% share in the segment that accounted for 57% shipments for the year.

About the future sales trends, Naveen Mishra, Lead Telecoms Analyst, CyberMedia Research says, "In 2012, the proportion of smartphones with extended features like NFC and 3D gaming are likely to increase. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft and Nokia take their partnership to the next level with a new range of smart devices based on the Windows 7.5 Mango OS platform".
