Google’s Project Ara Smartphone Parts Will Be Hot-Swappable

Everything apart from the CPU and the display can be swapped while the phone is on.

 

Google's Project Ara seems to have died out after the showing up on day two of Google I/O for a demo. While the demo did not last too long, it was indeed a sign of life from a project that we thought we would never hear from again. Well, after a really long break we now have another bit of news when Project Ara Technical Head, Paul Eremenko showed up at the Linaro Connect US Conference 2014 and spoke about a pretty interesting topic, swappable parts.

We all knew that the Project Ara team did include in the handset’s design, the ability to swap parts out like the battery or a camera. What they did not confirm back then, was how many parts could be removed and when. Well Eremenko busted a couple of myths by confirming that all the parts excluding the CPU and the display, were hot swappable.

This means that you could be messaging someone and you suddenly decided to add an image to your message. But the image existed on another memory chip. With hot swapping capabilities you could simply pull out one module while the messaging app is running and insert another one like a lego block. No unmounting memory cards, no peeling off back covers and more importantly no need to power down your phone, even if you are accessing that part of your Gray Phone.

Other details that Eremenko let out include bits about the software, that the first smartphone would be running a modified version of Android L.

While everything does sound interesting and unbelievable, Paul Eremenko and his team have their hands full as the deadline is certainly nearing and the world awaits to see its first full-fledged modular smartphone.
