The Second Round Of Layoffs At Microsoft Could Happen Today
In all, the company plans to cut 18,000 jobs by early next year
The cogs of Microsoft's massive employee rejig have been set in motion, with new reports suggesting a significant amount of the company's employees could be laid off before the end of this week. The move will be a part of the Redmond giant's plan to reduce its headcount by nearly 18,000 by early 2015.
According to Zdnet's incredibly well informed Mary-Jo Foley, the layoffs will affect almost every group at the company, but as earlier reports have suggested the bulk of job losses will come from the recently acquired handset division. The upcoming job cuts are in addition to the 12,500 employees who were sacked by Nokia back in July.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had stated that the company's headcount had been pushed north of 125,000 full-time employees with the Nokia takeover. The reduction of 18,000 jobs at will result in the saving of over $1 billion within a years time, and was a necessity for maintaining the health of the company, which has been struggling in the mobile space.
There's also a hint that over one-fifth of Microsoft's non full-time staff who're mostly comprised of testers and engineers could also be relieved of their jobs. It however isn't clear if these people are part of the announced 18,000 layoffs, or what Microsoft's non full-time staff strength is.
