Amazon Has Bought Twitch For $970 Million, Not Google

So much for earlier reports that 'confirmed' the deal between Twitch and Google was sealed

After months of rumours suggesting that Google's Youtube division will buy game-streaming site Twitch, Amazon has shocked everyone by announcing it has acquired Twitch for $970 million. That figure is very close to the $1 billion Google had supposedly agreed to pay for the service, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

The news comes as a shock to everyone, especially after reports suggesting the deal between Google and Twitch was sealed, and the two companies were just waiting on going public about it. The silence that followed should have been a good enough indicator of the happenings behind closed doors.

When Twitch made changes to its platform policies a few weeks ago, the blame was pinned on influence from Google, the most obvious offender. It still isn't known why the deal between Google and Twitch fell apart, or if one even existed, but reports now suggest it most likely could have been antitrust concerns.

Announcing the move, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said, “We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.”

The deal is still pending regulatory approval, and will most likely close in the second half of this year. Amazon gave little information about what the acquisition meant for Twitch and itself, but did lay emphasis on learning and accelerated growth.
