Finally an app that does mail better than Windows Phone itself.

 

Don’t know about you, but we at Techtree at times have found email a bit of a problem when it comes to Windows Phone. Yes, Windows Phone does offer Gmail, but then again there is limited support for labels and you cannot even star mark your important mails, making the native email app pretty painful for power users. Earlier the only other alternative was MetroMail another client which did the same old thing with some added features. Well now, we finally have a winner in the form of 1Mail, and believe us, it will change your perspective about email on Windows Phone.

Yes, when we said the last line, we did intend to say that the app is a Windows Phone exclusive. The 1Mail team has done a brilliant job, and even though the app is a bit buggy at some places, its almost perfect for Gmail users who have shifted to the Windows Phone herd. The app of course is in its beta stage, but is available for free and and is ad free as well.

As for the app, well one look and you will be sold on the UI. It makes your native email client look old (very old). All the conversations and emails look like a twitter feed, with circular images, alphabets or logos replacing contact names and images appearing in your primary inbox feed. This is an advantage as you don’t even need to open an email, since you already know what it contains; just swipe from the centre of the message to the right to archive or delete.

1Mail finally brings labels to Windows Phone. 1Mail calls them ‘Lanes’ but they are pretty handy and will help your sort out your mails. Mails get automatically sorted and you get a clean Primary Lane with just the stuff that you need to read. Lanes like Gmail’s labels are also customisable and you can add the colour of your choice to the pre-defined or custom Lane. So what you do you do if have a lot of Lanes? Well you swipe from any side of the bezel (left or right) to navigate up and down lanes. Pretty simple ain’t it?

For now 1Mail only offers support for multiple Gmail account and they will be adding other types of email services to the beta app shortly. Every account can also be pinned with dynamic live tiles and yes the stars markings from your Gmail account also appear out here.

All of this and the team at 1Mail states that the app is still in beta and that they are working on more features. As of now the only annoying bug we found was that content within emails had to be pinched out every time we opened a mail, but that was about it.

Indeed 1Mail does come across as the saving grace for Gmail users who have switched over from Android to Windows Phone. Lets hope the app switches out of beta soon and if you have downloaded the beta app, be sure to help the devs out to squash all those bugs.
