Baidu's Take On The Self-Driving Car Makes More Sense Than Google's

Drivers will have the option to lean back and be driven, or take control of the vehicle.

 

China's most popular search engine Baidu has revealed that it too is building highly automated vehicles, but unlike Google's car it claims drivers will have the option of taking control of its vehicles. Amusingly the company compares its car to a horse, highlighting the ability to drive itself or to be taken control of.

Jokes aside, we think Baidu's take on the self-driving car will appeal to car owners far more than Google's completely autonomous mouse car. Kai Yu, director of Baidu's Institute of Deep Learning, said he envisions a future where drivers can either sit back and be driven, or choose to drive themselves, according to a TNW report.

Baidu's take on the self-driven car is very different from what Google is pioneering in the USA, but it isn't a new concept either. Most car manufacturers sinking their feet into the self-driving game have already made it pretty clear that the steering wheel and pedals are going nowhere for the foreseeable future.

"We don't call this a driverless car. I think a car should be helping people, not replacing people, so we call this a highly autonomous car," said Kai Yu, in an interaction with TNW. He also stressed on the fundamental difference in concept between Baidu's and Google's take on the automobile of the future.

“Freedom means the car is intelligent enough to operate by itself, like a horse, and make decisions under different road situations. Whenever the driver wants to resume control, you can do that. It's like riding on a horse, rather than just sitting in a car where you only have a button," he added.
