Microsoft Takes On Google; Doubles Free OneDrive Cloud Storage

The company will also offer all Office 365 subscribers 1TB of free OneDrive storage.

Microsoft has announced that it is doubling the amount of free storage offered to users of its OneDrive service from 7GB to 15GB. Further, Office 365 subscribers, whether they be individual, business, enterprise or university, will get 1TB of free cloud storage.

The company is clearly looking to compete with other cloud storage services, especially Google Drive, which incidentally offers 15GB of free storage. Moreover, Microsoft is trying to boost the number of takers for its Office 365 subscription service, with 1TB of free storage for everyone.

For users without a Office 365 subscription, Microsoft has revised the rates of buying storage space on OneDrive. Users can get 100GB of storage for $1.99 for 100 GB (previously available at $7.49 per month) and $3.99 for 200 GB (previously $11.49 per month). Current contracts will automatically change to the new offers.

With ever increasing storage needs, especially on mobile devices, cloud storage is becoming a lucrative business. Apart from Google and Microsoft, Box and Dropbox are the other two big players in the market who offer 10GB and 2GB of free storage respectively.
