Facebook's Snapchat Rival Makes A Brief Appearance On The App Store
Slingshot is similar to Snapchat in many ways, but it requires users to react to received messages before viewing them.
Recently we got wind of social networking giant Facebook working on a self-destructing messaging client similar to Snapchat, and the rumours have now been confirmed. According to Engadget, the app named Slingshot briefly showed up on the App Store giving, enough information about the features and the working of the app.
Similar to Snapchat, users will be able to send photos and videos to friends, which upon viewing once will disappear. Users will even be able to add captions and scribbles on them, which is again a feature borrowed from Snapchat.
However, unlike Snapchat and other similar services, users of Slingshot will have to react (sling) to your sent messages before they can view them. The receiver will have the option to either tap to react or swipe to dismiss it and make it disappear forever.
Facebook confirmed that they'd accidentally released a version of Slingshot on the App Store, and that the app will be released soon. From what we already know, Slingshot is being developed by the same boffins at Facebook that gave us Paper, the dedicated news-reading app.
"Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we're working on. With Slingshot, you'll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It'll be ready soon and we're excited for you to try it out," said a Facebook spokesperson, in a reply to Engadget.
Slingshot is not Facebook's first attempt to create a rival to Snapchat, but was in fact its Poke app which was shuttered soon after release. Mark Zuckerberg since then went on to call the Poke app a bad joke, and that it was doomed right from the beginning.
