China's ZTE Has Six Smartphones Lined Up For Launch In India
Apart from launching new handsets, the company will also setup an R&D centre in the country.
Chinese telecom equipment giant ZTE plans to launch six new handsets in India this year and also setup a world class R&D centre in the country. The move is squarely aimed at growing its smartphone arm which already generates a third of the company's revenues in the country.
According to the Economic Times, the upcoming devices will be priced between Rs 7,000-18,000 and will be a mix of devices offering 3G and 4G connectivity. Given that more people in India access the internet through mobile than PCs, it is expected that demand for handsets which offer fast net connectivity will grow.
"ZTE is particularly gung-ho about the business potential of 4G LTE deployments in India and we will shortly finalise specific 4G models that will be launched," said Adam Zeng, VP and Global Head of ZTE's handset arm, in the ET report.
In India the company will opt for a hybrid marketing strategy – tying up with mobile operators as well as independent (large & small) retail chains. To sell its more premium devices, ZTE plans to tie-up with online retailers such as Amazon, eBay and Flipkart.
Apart from this, ZTE is in talks with chipmakers MediaTek, Marvell and Qualcomm to bring affordable 4G enabled smartphones to the country. It believes that affordability is the key to drive growth of 4G handsets, but the move will also have to be backed by operators with the lowering of tariffs.
