What To Expect From Apple's WWDC Event Today
As usual Apple is very tight lipped about what it will unveil at the event, but here's what rumours from trusted sources say.
Apple is all set to kick off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2014)that will be held in San Francisco later on Monday.
While the company has historically remained tight lipped about upcoming products and features, based on past rumours, leaks and confirmations here's what you can likely expect to see at the event.
iOS 8
Apple's next iteration of its iOS mobile operating system will definitely be unveiled at WWDC 2014 based on event banners which leaked last week. Rumours have pointed out that there will be no major redesign of the UI, but it will be more about the addition of new features.
Healthbook will be one major app the company will most definitely showcase at the event, which is basically a health/fitness tracker. Moreover, what makes Healthbook so interesting is that Apple is supposedly working on a health tracking device, a.k.a the iWatch, which will function as the sensory base for collecting data.
Apart from Healthbook, expect Apple to roll out improvements for Apple Maps with transit directions, more functionality for Siri, a standalone app for iTunes Radio and updates for Touch ID in relation to payments and transactions.
The one feature that isn't expected to be rolled out just yet is split-screen multitasking feature like that of Windows 8. A New York Times report confirmed that Apple's split-screen multitasking isn't ready yet and will not be rolled out from day one on iOS 8.
Mac OS X 10.10
Recent trademark filings by Apple indicate that the next version of Apple's OS X PC operating system will be called “OS X Yosemite”. It is expected that Apple will finally do away with the brushed aluminum design elements of OS X, and will go in for a flat, minimal design mirroring iOS 7 and 8.
Apart from the UI change, Apple is expected to include an iOS style control panel and will roll out new editions of its iWork and iLife suites.
Hardware
It has long been rumoured that Apple will unveil a new line of Macs at WWDC 2014, and it wouldn't be surprising since the company has done so in the past. A new MacBook Air with a Retina display has been doing rounds for quite some time now, but the jury is split on the truth of the news.
A new version of Apple TV has again been talked about for a long time, which is set to usher in a revolution in television viewing. So far we've just been treated to minor upgrades, but the time for a wholly new product seems right as Google and Amazon are stepping up their presence in the market.
The recently leaked 'home automation' feature allowing iPhone and iPad users to control everything from lights, security cameras and home appliances could be unveiled at WWDC 2014. However, some insiders claim the home automation feature will merely be a certification for home appliance to be used with Apple products, just as the company has done with everything from iPhone speaker docks and other accessories.
