Google To Lease Solar Panels For Powering Regular Homes

The cost will be lower than the home's regular electricity bill, offering enough incentives for people to make the shift.

Internet giant Google has been working on several ways to reduce its impact on the environment, and has been a major investor in solar energy over the years. Now however the company is planning an initiative to offer the average consumer with enough incentives to go green too.

Google has announced that it is starting a $250 million fund (out of which $100 million will be its own cash) to buy solar panels and then lease them to regular American households. According to Engadget the company hasn't provided specifics of the cost to consumers, but did mention it will be “typically lower” than a home's regular electricity bill.

Solar energy is fast emerging as the frontrunner in the world of sustainable energy, and with photovoltaic cells getting ever cheaper, it is becoming more and more accessible to regular consumers. This move by Google could really kick off a revolution in the way homes are powered in the future, by effectively removing the initial cost of buying solar panels.

Until and unless consumers are provided with an incentive to shift to green energy, they aren't going to do so. Moreover, Google and anyone else who invests in the project is likely to make their money back over time as the race for sustainable energy really kicks off.
