Microsoft Officially Announces Its Partnership With Micromax For Windows Phone
Android will finally have some competition in the budget phone market, and no there will be no dual boot devices.
Microsoft made a splash at yesterday's Build event, rolling out a host of new features for its Windows Mobile and showing off future capabilities of its Windows OS in general. Among others, the company also announced that it is entering into a partnership with Indian mobile manufacturer Micromax.
The Indian company will make low-cost devices running on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Platform, which will sell alongside the offerings from Nokia. According to Times of India, both parties have been in talks to partner up since the middle of last year.
In January this year, Microsoft had announced that it would make Windows Mobile free to use for Indian brands such as Micromax, Lava and Karbonn. All three brands currently only manufacture phones running Google's Android OS which is available to manufacturers at no cost.
News of Indian brands looking into the possibility of launching dual boot Android/Windows 8 smartphones is however out of the question. With both Microsoft and Google cracking down on manufacturers of such devices, it seems highly unlikely to happen even in India.
Moreover, with the Microsoft and Micromax partnership, Windows Phone finally has a chance to compete with Android devices in the budget phone market. This is especially important for the Redmond company if it plans on building a large user base.
