Samsung Wants To Use Google's Might To Battle Apple in Court

Why would Samsung blame Google for copying from Apple, especially in light of their fruitful relationship?

 

The patent war between Samsung and Apple is in its second round, with the Korean electronics giant opening up its case by saying that the iPhone maker was indirectly going after Google by targeting Samsung.

 

While the idea isn't a new one, it is according to The Verge a very different approach Samsung is taking to defend itself in the California court this time around.

 

"The accused features on this phone were developed independently by some of the most sophisticated minds in the industry — the company up the road in Mountain View," said John Quinn of law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, while holding up a Galaxy Nexus device.

 

Google is clearly the company referred to in the statement, and while the company is not listed as a defendant on the lawsuit, all the devices Apple has accused Samsung of infringing run Android. It's also why Samsung started off its case with the Galaxy Nexus device which runs a pure version of Google's Operating system.

 

The Verge says this is a tactic employed by Samsung to sway the jurors to view it not as a copycat, a niggle that led to it losing the court battle with Apple last time around. On the other hand Samsung was seen as pushing itself across as primarily a hardware manufacturer, a place where it believes it very well differentiates itself from Apple.

 

"Samsung and Apple went in very different directions in 2011 and 2012," Quinn added. "These features I'm showing you on the Nexus and Galaxy Note, including large screen, replaceable batteries, faster speed, and styluses are things that distinguish Samsung products."

 

Samsung went on to make a case that the features for which Apple is suing it are ordinary, and not things that sway customers into buying devices.

 

"Consumers don't choose one phone over another because of particular way word corrections are displayed," Quinn argued. "You don't buy a phone because of the way software syncs in the background, or the particular design of the unlock screen."

 

While it is too early to speculate which way the battle is headed, it is clear that Samsung is counting on Google's might to help ward off Apple's threat. The company is in no way blaming Google of stealing from Apple, a move would be highly counter-intuitive given Samsung's and Google's relationship.
