Office For Apple iPad: From Microsoft With Love
Free to use, the apps will be limited to viewing and presenting documents only.
The Apple-Microsoft bond seems to be getting stronger. It certainly seemed odd when Satya Nadella took to the stage displaying a competitors device, the iPad. He showed how much effort was put into making these apps work properly with Apple’s best-selling tablet the iPad.
Office for iOS has been in the rumour mill for quite some time, and with Nadella's appointment as CEO it became obvious that the app will be released soon. As General Manager of Microsoft Office, Julia White puts it, “This is definitely not the Windows app ported to the iPad,”. It is evident since everything seems to go well with Apple's OS. The only bit of the UI that does fall out of place with Apple’s design guidelines is the ribbon to navigate between tabs.
All three apps, Word, Excel, PowerPoint offer new features such as re-flowing and formatting. While Office for iPad is quite good, they still aren't functional as its Windows RT and Windows 8.1 counterparts. Yes, the free version will only allow users to view and present files on their iPad. For editing, you will be required to subscribe to Office 365 service that costs around Rs 420 a month or Rs 4200 a year.
While Microsoft may be providing everyone with the Office experience, for the true unadulterated version Windows is still the king. Makes perfect business sense for the Redmond tech-giant.
