Google Apes Facebook; Yahoo! Follows Google

Similar features now being rolled out across services.

 

Looks like in between original innovation and "recreating" something that already exists, the latter seems to be becoming more popular. After Facebook announced its intention of highlighting television-show centric conversations, Google has followed suite. The search giant now gives you more information about TV shows, as you search for them using the service.

Google explains: "For example, say that you’re wondering when the next season of The Walking Dead starts. Try searching for [the walking dead tv show] and you’ll see all episodes listed along with their air dates. The first season kicks off with an episode called “30 Days Without An Accident” on October 13, which means you only have a few days to refresh your memory by watching last season’s final episode, “Welcome to the Tombs.”Don’t have time to re-watch that episode but still want a refresher?  Click on the episode title and you’ll see relevant results. This new episode information is in addition to details you can already find through the Knowledge Graph, like ratings, cast, characters and more". 

So instead of just talking about what you saw, Google now helps you catch up on what you missed.

Talking about drawing inspirations, Merrisa Meyer, who moved away from Google to become the CEO of Yahoo! has caused a major overhaul in Yahoo mail's aesthetics. It now resembles Gmail a lot more, with features such as ‘conversation view’ instead of the folder structure, and mobile app integration has been introduced as per reports. These can be selectively turned off as well. Another similarity is the integration of in-line images being saved on Flickr. That said, as compared to the measly 15 GB storage space offered by Google, Yahoo! opens up the entire 1 TB of Flickr space to Yahoo! mail users. Will all this make you switch to Yahoo! now?
