Love TV Shows? Now, Blab More About It On Facebook
Facebook wants you to talk more about the TV shows that you watch and enjoy.
Look who's talking about TV! Why it's the over-friendly, constantly nagging Facebook, with our 100 digital friends whom we "supposedly" have meaningful digital conversations with.
Well, Facebook isn't being broadcast straight onto our TV's (yet), but rather, we can now have "more meaningful" chats about our favourite TV shows. This is due to Facebook figuring out that people love yapping about the shows they watch and therefore would love to cash in on for the love of communities and money connecting them together on a single platform, Facebook has started an initiative, which is still in Beta.
The Beta involves two new APIs to make it easier for content producers to integrate public conversations on Facebook into their shows. The Public Feed API is a real-time feed of public posts, to pull out and feature in broadcasts. And the Keyword Insights API allows partners to search Facebook posts for a specific term and understand basic demographic information, including gender, age and location.
Why is Facebook doing this?
Apparently, as per Facebook, they observed that "..a lot of what people are talking about on Facebook is related to their favorite TV shows. For example, during last week’s finale of Breaking Bad, over 3 million people generated 5.5 million interactions on Facebook. And when Andy Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years, there were 29 million interactions on Facebook about the event. These are huge audiences, and we’re humbled to be helping so many people share and connect with one another”.
This announcement was made at the global television conference MIPCOM in Cannes, where Facebook is extending the Beta to new partners across France, Germany, Brazil, Canada, and India.
So what does this mean for us?
Other than us incessantly yapping, nothing much. It means that content providers can gauge the quantity and quality of conversations going on, and it all can be measured in a way that will be leveraged for monetary reasons. This isn't anything new, with Facebook allowing embedding of posts and Trending of topics, Facebook does seem to be keeping an eye (and ear) out for new ways of connecting and leveraging the enormous amount of information that comes into their servers. Makes sense from their point of view, and in the meantime could make consumers like us, mini-Facebook stars or thoroughly embarrassed, depending on what trends and where.
