Dish TV's DishOnline App Brings Streaming TV Content to iOS, Android Devices

Marketed as 'anywhere, anytime viewing' of TV through mobile devices; priced at Rs 49 and onwards.

 

Can't get enough of the saas-bahu tripe on the boob tube? Well, Dish TV will be streaming all that brain drain to your mobile device now. Dubbed as DishOnline, the streaming app is available for Android and iOS devices. The app is, however, restricted to Dish TV subscribers only. Apart from mobile devices, DishOnline will also be accessible through web browsers on the PC. Unfortunately, no further information has been forthcoming on the PC implementation.

Dish TV hasn't set up the infrastructure for delivering the streaming content itself, but has instead tied up with an online streaming portal Ditto TV. Ditto itself has its own streaming service that offers a wider and varied content from other broadcasters such as Colors as well for a small premium. DishOnline subscribers, on the other hand, can choose content between four categories—live TV, movies, TV shows, and videos. This includes a library of 1000 films spread across Bollywood and Hollywood.

The service requires subscribes to fork out Rs 129 for the Jumbo Pack that comes with live streaming channels, whereas the starter pack is much cheaper at Rs 49, but it lacks access to the streaming TV content. Dish TV's introductory offer gives a serious discount at Rs 69 and 29 for the Jumbo and Starter packs respectively. The Live Channel feeds include offerings such as Zee TV, Sony, Sab, Zee Cinema, Zee Studio, Zee Cafe, Ten Action, Ten Cricket, Zee News, Aaj Tak, BBC, Sony Mix, Masti, Zee Marathi, Zee Tamil and Zee Telugu.

With 3G data packages being severely limited and the total cost being high, it seems unlikely that consumers will be interested in accessing Live TV programming on the move. However, it does make sense at home over Wi-Fi infrastructure. Nothing like having a second screen to watch your favourite sports channel while your wife watches her saas-bahu programs. Or vice-a-versa if you happen to be a bit less hen-pecked husband.
