Facebook Status Lands Bangladeshi Teacher In Jail
The Bangladesh HC slapped a six month jail sentence on the University lecturer for contempt of court.
Public outpour on social networking site Facebook landed Ruhul Khandakar, a university lecturer in jail. Bangladesh's high court sentenced him in absentia as he is currently studying in Australia. As per court officials, the post read, "Tareq Masud died as a result of government giving licence to unqualified drivers. Many die, why does not Sheikh Hasina die?" Tareq Masud, one of Bangladesh's most famous filmmakers, was killed in a road accident last year.
The status, which was posted from Australia, has since been removed. Khandakar received summons to explain his status in August, 2011. However, since then he has repeatedly faltered to appear in Bangladeshi courts for obvious reasons. Rahul was subsequently held in contempt of court. Since the man hasn't shown up yet, the court has directed his university employers to take action against him instead, which means he may lose his job.
This is especially scary, considering the zeal with which Kapil Sibal is eager to clamp down on free speech on Facebook. It's disturbing to imagine what will happen in India if Kapil Sibal starts targeting Indians in the same manner.
