ROCCAT Unveils Kave XTD 5.1 Digital Gaming Headset
Includes six discrete drivers for authentic surround sound and more LEDs than a rickshaw walla can shake a stick at.
If you're the kind that gets nostalgic about Zalman's true 5.1 headset, ROCCAT's upcoming offering, the Kave XTD 5.1 Digital, should get you quite excited. The headset has just been unveiled at the Gamescom conference in Germany. A successor to the the Kave 5.1, which was the German gaming peripheral manufacturer's first true multi-channel headset, the improved version incorporates three drivers per ear-cup aligned at a 12-degree angle to recreate true 5.1-channel surround sound.
The headset puts the "surround" in surround sound by bundling a “premium” 5.1-channel sound card that also serves as a blinged-up desktop remote control, replete with more LEDs than a rickshaw-walla can shake a stick at. The remote can even hook up to your smartphone via Bluetooth to enable hands-free telephony while gaming. That's a great way to tell your boss that you can't put the cover sheet on the TPS report from home because you've been pinned down with suppressive fire. From terrorists equipped with fully automatic weapons, nonetheless. I mean, who can argue with the tell-tale report of multiple Kalashnikovs going off in the background?!
The ROCCAT Kave XTD 5.1 Digital solves the problem of excessive bulk affecting multi-channel gaming headsets by incorporating lightweight materials. It sports a completely reworked headband that's touted to be 25% lighter than the outgoing model and hence more comfortable. The LED fetish extends to the detachable microphone as well, with a plethora of diodes meant for bling as well as to indicate mute on/off status. Check out the rather boring announcement video to know more, which would have put me to sleep if it weren't for the constipated Chinese narrator grunting away in the background.
The headset will hit the European store shelves by November, which should be followed by an Indian launch shortly. The launch price has been pegged at 170 euros (Rs 14,800 approx), so expect the Indian price to be a bit dearer on account of import duties.
