Instagram Gets Bitten By A Fake 'Like' Bug

Companies buy likes and followers along with credit card details at throwaway prices.

Not so happy news on "World Photography Day" for Instagram aficionados, as the photo sharing service has been reportedly hit by a new bug. Reuters reports that a phishing virus, known as Zeus (surely inspired by G.I.J.O.E Retaliation Zeus missiles), can now help companies create a "buzz" with bogus Instagram "likes". As per Reuters, Cyber ..experts at RSA, add that these "likes" are traded in batches across as many as 1000 Internet hacker forums: A 1000 followers will set you back by $15; 1000 likes cost $30; and as an added bonus, 1000 credit card numbers can be yours for a meagre $6.

The fact that brands pick popularity over stealing money off you, it's plain to see not just the importance of social media, but also the fact that they can recover the money selling junk to unsuspecting victims anyway. So next time you see many likes on a product (except techtree.com likes, they are always real ;P), take some time off and ponder over whether it deserves so much of lauding, and if it's worth investing into as well.
