Vodafone Slashes 2G Data Prices By 80%
This move by Vodafone may lead to a new trend of tariff slashing by major telcos, in the now "almost legacy" 2G technology segment.
Vodafone this week slashed 2G data charges by up to 80 percent. The "tariff slashing" would initially be applicable to prepaid and postpaid customers in Vodafone's Karnataka, MP, UP West and Chhattisgarh telecom circles. The reduction of 2G charges is expected to happen in phases throughout the country. According to the new 2G tariff, customers would be charged 2 Paise for every 10 KB data consumed as opposed to the earlier tariff of 10 Paise for every 10 KB.
The company had recently came under the DOT scanner with respect to the company not possessing 3G spectrum in certain telecom circles, and also risked the suspension of its licence being cancelled, or bid for fresh auctions. All major mobile operators have been slashing their data usage tariffs, perhaps due to the fear of losing loyal customer base (and revenue). With 4G in India taking its baby steps, GPRS/EDGE data over 2G may soon find itself in the legacy segment, used for its low price or in an area without 3G/4G signals.
