K900 Heralds Lenovo's First x86 Smartphone In India
Five other phones launched alongside Lenovo's first Intel-based smartphone, for a total of 6 different price points.
Lenovo's much-hyped Intel-powered smartphone, the K900 has finally been launched in India. The 5.5 inch smartphone was originally announced way back in January, during this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2013). The Lenovo K900 is priced at a high Rs 32,000 in India, and is touted as the the nearest "competitor" to Samsung's new flagship, the GALAXY S4. It will run Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) out of the box.
The smartphone has a 1080p display and a 13 MP rear camera, which is pretty good. An aspect that triggered interest among enthusiasts was the Lenovo K900 outperforming the Samsung GALAXY S4 in the AnTuTu Benchmark tests last month. The Lenovo K900 would be one of the first Intel x86-based Android devices with quad-core-like processing. The presence of Hyper Threading makes for 4 simultaneous threads, and Intel must be hoping it makes a big splash, selling at least as well as the pioneering Xolo X900 of last year, if not better.
As for the tech-specs, Lenovo K900 offers:
- 5.5" IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 2
- 1920x1080 Full-HD resolution, ~401 ppi density
- Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system
- 2 GHz dual-core processor, Intel Atom Z2580 (x86 chipset of Clover Trail+ family)
- PowerVR SGX544 GPU (relatively weaker than the top-end)
- 2 GB RAM
- 16 GB internal storage, MicroSD card slot (supports up to 32 GB)
- 13 MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
- A-GPS, Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity
- Li-ion 2500 mAh battery
- weighs in at 162gbs, and measures 6.5mm in thickness
The actual performance/speed and battery life this phone can offer, will be keenly watched to see how it measures up to ARM-based chips.
Apart from the K900, Lenovo has also launched 5 other models that range from low-end to high-end. Consider that Lenovo's top executives have been saying lately that they would target more sales growth outside of China (their home market). In spite of the Lenovo K900 being the cynosure of all eyes, these additional phones that run Android on ARM chips have reasonably good tech-specs as well, and will probably compete with Samsung's popular GALAXY smartphone series across the price spectrum.
