Acer Iconia A1 Tablet With 7.9" IPS Screen Announced
Jelly Bean device is powered by a quad-core CPU and sports dual cameras; India price and availability yet to be confirmed.
Acer has announced the Iconia A1 tablet running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). The decently spec'd tablet is powered by a quad-core CPU with 1 GB of RAM. The internal storage is 8/16 GB while it is possible to expand it via up to 32 GB microSD card. It sports a 7.9" IPS capacitive multi-touch display with pixel dimensions of 1024x768 (which means a non-widescreen 4:3 aspect ratio). A front facing 0.3 MP camera is available for video chat, while photography can be done via a 5 MP rear snapper. Here are the specifications:
- Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), Google Play Store.
- 7.9" capacitive multi-touch IPS screen with pixel dimensions of 1024x768.
- 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek CPU.
- 1 GB RAM, 8/16 GB internal storage, Up to 32 GB microSD card support.
- 5 megapixel rear camera with 1080p capture and 0.3 megapixel front camera.
- Wi-Fi only/Wi-Fi + 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, GPS, 3.5 mm audio jack, micro-HDMI, micro-USB.
- 3250 mAh battery.
- 8.2" x 5.7" x 0.43" (11.1 mm), Weight: 410 grams (Wi-Fi only); 430 grams (Wi-Fi + 3G).
Interestingly, the screen size and pixel resolution is the same as the Apple iPad mini, which is more expensive at around Rs 22,000. However, we doubt it will be able to compete with the iDevice, which has access to more apps and a polished OS. The similarity to an iPad but with the addition of a microSD card slot, can help the Iconia A1's asking price move up, in direct relation to the probability that Apple would sue if the product succeeded well.
The tablet will be available with Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G connectivity options. Judging from the specifications, the tablet should perform well in just about any application or game. However, it is mentioned that the MSRP for the 16 GB version will be $200 (approx Rs 10,800) (although it is not mentioned if this is for the Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + 3G version), and it will be available in June in the US. The pricing and availability for India is yet to be announced. Considering that the US release price of the Iconia B1 is $150 (Rs 8100) and it costs Rs 8000 in India, we can deduce that the Iconia A1 should be priced around Rs 14,000 - Rs 15,000 because the company is likely to sell it for more by hyping the quad-core CPU. As mentioned earlier, the price will vary depending on the connectivity options. If Acer does introduce the Iconia A1 at this price in India, it is likely to blow away the competition because there just doesn't exist any serious challenger in this price range with such specs.
