NVIDIA Introduces New GeForce 700M GPU Series For Laptops

Promises better performance and lower power consumption.

NVIDIA has announced its latest GeForce 700M series of GPU for laptops, which is said to be more power efficient and faster than its predecessor. The official press release suggests that the GeForce 700M GPUs brings back the Optimus technology from its earlier versions that switches off the GPU to transferred load on to the on-board graphics to save power, when the laptop is used for regular tasks such as word processing, internet surfing, or playing music. The GPU is kicked into action when its requirement sensed, for example when a 3D game is launched. This helps the battery last longer.

That being said, there are a couple of new technologies incorporated in the 700M as well. GPU Boost 2.0 claims to intelligently adjust the GPU's clock speed to maximise the performance, with up to 6.5% faster results than at stock speed. GeForce Performance is yet another technology that is part of the feature set, which automatically changes game settings to ensure that the user gets the best combination of visual quality and performance on account of system configuration. The good thing is that all of the above happens automatically, without explicit user intervention.

The series will feature five different GPUs covering various price and performance segments — GeForce GT 720M and GeForce GT 735M for mainstream users, while GeForce GT 740M, GeForce GT 745M, and GeForce GT 750M goes under the performance segment. Major laptop makers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba are expected to soon start incorporating these in their upcoming models.
