And Now MTV Gets Hacked, Not!
Music channel hacks its own Twitter account (for the US of A) in a bizarre publicity stunt.
Hacking has been in the news a little too much of late. Last week it was Burger King's Twitter account getting hacked by someone called "McDonalds" (not related to the famous food chain). Then it was Jeep supposedly hacked by Chrysler.
Now it seems that it is MTV's turn to get its Twitter account hacked with a series of bizarre tweets originating from its authentic account. However, it was quickly discovered that the hack was not a hack at all, rather it was just a prank orchestrated by the company itself and its sister network BET (Black Entertainment Television), both media properties of ViaCom, according to a report on TechCrunch.
It seemed to be an authentic hack because of the raunchy nature (which cannot be mentioned here, but you can take a look at the screenshot anyway) of the tweets about celebs that would not have been expected to really originate from the company itself.
While MTV may want to call it a prank, we think it is more of a publicity stunt. The reason for our thinking is that after the Burger King hack last week, the company actually gained over 30,000 followers to end up at more than 1,12,000, which is a huge jump from its previous number of around 77,000. The hack also resulted in an increase in the number of BK related conversations to over four folds the normal level.
It is very likely that MTV may also have tried to pull off a stunt to increase the following for it and BET. In fact, MTV's social media manager mentioning "MMM. THIS BURGER TASTES GOOD !!!!!!!!!!" clearly points to this direction. Also, there wasn't anything to worry about for the company as this wasn't really a hack and the outcome could only be positive at best (apparently). However, it seemed a little tasteless to take a dig at celebs, assuming they were not taken into confidence about this. Also, MTV already has around 6.7 million followers and it therefore seems ridiculous for it to resort to such cheap tactics to gain more.
