Facebook's Midnight Message Delivery For New Year's Eve Suffers From A Major Security Hole

Takes down app to fix issues; delivery service up and running again now.

 

Facebook had floated a service wherein you could set up private messages to be delivered to your loved ones at the stroke of midnight at the turn of the New Year. But the app reportedly suffered from a major security flaw: A small tweak in the URL, and users logged into FB can access anyone's private messages, even delete them. You can read more details here. Now for a company that hosts its annual Hackers Cup in January every year, it is embarassing that a major flaw in its service has been detected. While New Year Greetings may or may not be confidential or sensitive, the fact that such easy access to messages marked private is disturbing, to say the least.

Facebook has finally woke up from its slumber by first deactivating the service and then fixing the issue for good. The service is now up so for those whose messages haven’t been compromised (or "accidently" deleted) you can now check out your New Year wishes again.
