Microsoft's "Socl" Network Now Open To The Public

Social web service still in beta phase; users can log in using Facebook or Microsoft accounts.

After floating its social network for a while, Microsoft has launched a beta version. You can access the service — which is like Pinterest with a dash of Facebook — using your Microsoft or Facebook credentials. Like Google+, So.cl (pronounced "social") supports animated GIFs — which will appeal to Pinterest users. But unlike FB, there is no scope for text-based posts. Moreover, the service doesn’t let you upload any pictures directly: Only web-based images can be shared. The only way to put up pictures of your own is through services such as Dropbox, Picasa Web Albums, or Facebook Albums. You can add photos directly from the internet; image search is powered by Bing (this is a Microsoft service!).

You can add multiple images to a particular post, so the service reminds you of Windows Phone 8's live tiles of various sizes. Where exactly the service is headed, or what user base it targets, is unclear. It was initially intended for students as a research experience, but the final product seems far from that. Have you tried So.cl? Does it work for you? Let us know in the comments.
