Google Maps Introduces Panoramic Views Of The Antarctic

360-degree shots of various sites, including the Ceremonial South Pole, can now be viewed online.

Antarctica, the world's biggest desert (yes, a barren, icy wasteland is a desert too), can never be considered the ideal tourist spot. Only the bravest (and craziest) explorers, such as Ernest Shackleton,  Robert Falcon Scott, and Roald Amundsen  — the first man to reach the South Pole — will cheerily venture into such perilous places. Fortunately, if you're the type that likes a little adventure, but doesn't fancy the idea of trekking across bone-chilling locations, Google has come to your rescue. Under its World Wonders initiative, the search giant has taken its Street View feature into the heart of the Antarctic via Google Maps.

Under this new project, you can view panoramic shots from some historic locations in the world's coldest continent. Created in collaboration with the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust, 360° vistas of attractions, such as the South Pole Telescope, Shackleton's Hut, Scott’s Hut, Cape Royds Adélie Penguin Rookery, and even the Ceremonial South Pole, can now be enjoyed.

Through these high-quality images, viewers can marvel at how isolated the area around Robert Falcon Scott's supply hut was, or how well-stacked Shackleton's base was during his early 20th century Antarctic expeditions. These new photos have been taken with the help of a lightweight tripod camera mounted with a fisheye lens, resulting in detailed visuals of interior locations.

Google states that with such initiatives, it aims to provide scientists and travel enthusiasts with the most accurate and high-resolution data for research and knowledge. This is indeed a comendable gesture on search giant's part. Here is a video that quickly demonstrates the on-ground views of the aforementioned locations.
