Intel And Croma Launch Laptop Anti-Theft Service

Croma, the electronic retail giant, has launched a new service based on Intel's Anti-Theft technology. The service is targeted at laptop owners who would like to keep their sensitive data locked and protected in the event of a laptop theft. The service is only available for laptops powered with second-generation Intel Core processors.

The service works by encrypting data and storing it in a secure data vault, similar to the open-source Truecrypt software. In the event of the laptop being stolen or misplaced, you can remotely lock it once it connects to the internet. Furthermore, through hardware timers, you can also set the service to automatically lock itself after a specified period of not connecting to the internet. Intel claims that once the laptop has been locked, it cannot be operated even if the hard drive is replaced or the boot order is changed.

However, it is not clear if the timers can be circumvented by resetting or reprogramming the BIOS.

The service will be sold exclusively through Croma outlets in India. The pricing starts from Rs 200 onwards for a service period of 2 years. No word on the service renewal costs as yet, but it can be assumed to be similarly priced.

Overall, the service looks appealing due to the cheap pricing. However, it does not offer any options for tracking the stolen laptop or archiving its contents. You will need to use third-party application for backing up your data.
