Cyber Thieves are stealing thousands of Rupees from Gamers in India

A new report highlights an uptick in cyber-attacks on Indian gamers, mostly due to a lack of safeguards.

Gamers tend to compromise their online security to gain access to cheats and other competitive edges. Gamers in India are losing Rs 8,000 to cyber-attacks in the form of malicious software and account takeovers.

The online gaming industry in India is exploding with new gamers as Indians rush to play or watch their favourite games being played. And cyber-hackers have taken notice.

According to a new report titled Norton Cyber Safety Insights Report: Special Release Gaming & Cybercrime, every 3 in 4 gamers surveyed in India have experienced a cyberattack at one point or the other. And many have experienced a devastating financial loss.

Two in five gamers have been tricked into handing over their personal data. One in five have had personal data stolen and leaked online.

The findings are from a global study conducted by The Harris Poll that surveyed adults aged 18+ across eight countries, including 703 Indian online gamers.

The findings also indicate that the gamers themselves are at fault for compromising the security of their gaming account or device.

Every 2 in 5 Indian gamers shockingly said that they are "at least somewhat likely" to hack into the account of a friend, family member, or romantic partner if it would give them a competitive advantage. About 56% of respondents admitted that they might exploit a loophole or bug in a game to give themselves a competitive advantage.

At least every 2 in 5 respondents said they would even consider paying to take possession of another user’s gaming account. Around 46% said they might install cheats to their gaming account or gaming device in order to win, while 39% confessed they would hack into the gaming account of a random player.
