Samsung ventures into cloud gaming for TV

Samsung plans to return to the Cloud Gaming arena with exciting new offerings.

Samsung has announced that its hopping into the cloud gaming arena with their Tizen smart TV platform. The news came out of the Samsung Developer Conference keynote, but did not provide any other details like what platforms it would be available on, if any, or when it will launch. Cloud gaming is a space that many of its big tech competitors are getting into, and Samsung has dabbled in this space before.

In the early 2010s, Samsung partnered with game streaming company Gaikai to bring an early version of cloud gaming to its high-end TVs. The premise was the same as it is today — Samsung Cloud Gaming would let you play games with just a TV, internet connection, and handheld controller. The beta version of the system was launched but then Gaikai’s new owner decided to pull the plug and head in a different direction. Oh and the new owner was Sony, and the Cloud Gaming tech was eventually incorporated into the underwhelming PlayStation Now.

This year and next Samsung will face more competition than ever from some big tech rivals — Google with Stadia, Amazon with Luna, and other gaming-focused behemoths like Microsoft and Nvidia. The goal overall is to have game streaming services on as many platforms as possibl like phones and TVs.

On a Q&A on its website, Samsung says that its goal with its cloud gaming service is allowing “users to play the latest games on their Samsung Smart TV equipped with the Tizen platform.” Sounds like a pretty exclusive service, but what will happen remains to be seen. Samsung is working with its partners and will use web tech to power the service.
