Former US President Donald Trump announced last week that he would start a “media powerhouse.” Its flagship brand would be Truth Social, a social network that would “stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech.”
But within two hours hackers infiltrated a private version of Truth Social, creating fake accounts for Trump and his cronies.
Hackers posted images of defecating pigs and posted expletive-laced rants. Images of the hackers’ handiwork were circulated on other social media platforms. The hackers are affiliated with Anonymous and the purpose of the hack was part of their “online war against hate.”
After a several-year hiatus, Anonymous has re-emerged as a force against the far right in America. They recently took down a Texas Republican website after the passage of an anti-abortion bill, replacing the site with a Planned Parenthood fund-raiser.
In exposing the flaws of Truth Social ahead of its launch, hackers proved that Trump’s social network had such glaring vulnerabilities, which makes it unsafe for anyone to use, even Trump himself.
“We had a fun time trolling it to high heaven,” Aubrey Cottle, a hacker affiiated with Anonymous, said in an interview.
The hack forced the app’s developers to bar new accounts and eventually shutter the development platform.
The hack did not stop Trump’s company shares from surging as much as 400% to $52 per share last week.
