Samsung Rolls Out Camera Updates on Galaxy S20 Series

Early reviewers and adopters have been complaining about auto focus issues since the new series launched

 

Smartphone launches are becoming increasingly tedious, especially so with marquee brands who seem to be hurrying with them, only to follow up with updates to fix issues that missed the quality assurance. For Samsung, the Galaxy S20 mess-up comes right after early reviewers fidgeted with their pricey Galaxy Foldable last November.

This time round, the company revealed late in February that it was indeed working on some updates to the Galaxy S20 camera quality, especially on the Ultra model autofocus issues that early adopters and reviewers found on the phone’s latest quad-camera system.

A report published on SamMobile.com says the second batch of firmware updates for the Galaxy S20 series (the first was a security patch earlier this month) is rolling out in South Korea prior to a larger coverage. The report says the package weighs 253MB and would further improve the camera and its user experience.

Though the update doesn’t specifically state what the enhancements are, one can safely speculate that with reference to the cameras, it would be related to the slower-than-usual autofocus besides improvements to touch gestures that could get added. Of course, what they really are would be known when the updates roll out over more countries.

The changelog of the patch also suggests that users could make use of the flash while in ultrawide camera sensor mode, which is currently not available or stands disabled. There is also the standard bit about the patch enhancing the security of the Samsung account though once again the company doesn’t provide details.

The company had responded with a statement after reports of the malfunctioning camera first surfaced. “The Galaxy S20 features a ground-breaking, advanced camera system. We are constantly working to optimize performance to deliver the best experience for consumers. As part of this ongoing effort, we are working on a future update to improve the camera experience,” the company said in a statement published on TheVerge.com.

In the past, several reviewers had highlighted issues, specifically with the Galaxy S20 Ultra camera. They speculated that the issues were related in some way to the Phase Detection autofocus system used by the device that caused a delay when locking on to a subject and in some cases several focus searches that lead to fuzziness and wobbly video footage.

The standard Galaxy S20 and S20+ did not have these issue as they use the Dual Pixel autofocus, considered far more reliable in shooting scenarios. Given that the S20 Ultra had boasted its 108MP camera at launch, it is quite obvious why users are making it such a big deal for the Korean tech giant.
