Eyeing an iPhone 11? Take a Pause and Think Again
This article is not for Apple fanboys. If you happened to land on this page, please move on immediately as there is every chance that you’d be tempted to throw things at us
Once upon a time, Apple fanboys were deprecatingly described as iSheep for their tendency to queue up for the latest model of the iPhone. Today that queue isn’t growing. In fact, there are those who believe that post the launch of the iPhone 6 many moons ago, the snob-worthy brand hasn’t exactly added much in subsequent versions.
A week ago, Apple launched the iPhone 11 series with all the regular fanfare attached to this marquee September event. The phone will appear on Indian shelves on September 27 while the regular fanboys have already pre-ordered them through their friends in the US and even tied-up the logistics of a home delivery through friends traveling over the next two weeks.
However, does the new phone really offer anything extra or should users take the opportunity of going after some of the older models that suddenly dropped a few thousand rupees in the aftermath of the eleven? Post the price drop, online sellers claim that there’s been a renewed interest on both the iPhone XS and XR models.
Given that there’s nothing called “spending too much money” on a smartphone as the entire market survives on the installment scheme, these prospective buyers are happy to be paying 10K less on the EMIs for a phone that appears exactly the same as the newest avatar but for the addition of Lord Shiva’s third eye on the back of the phone!
Of course, Apple is careful to ensure that subsequent models have enough to boast about over their predecessors. The question is does one need to upgrade? This author shifted from an iPhone 6 directly to an iPhone XS for the sole reason that the former began showing symptoms of geriatric dissonance.
There are those who claim that the charm of the new model lies in its aesthetics while the rest of the features remain largely unchanged. Suddenly the home button goes away, only to return in a later avatar. The software gets continuously upgraded but for that one needn’t change the model since Apple does offer a free upgrade on some older models.
So, here’s a ready-reckoner for what users can expect if they plan to kickstart another EMI scheme coinciding with the Puja holidays this year…
- For starters, the new phone promises faster processing with the A13 Bionic processor. The question you may want to ask is whether your existing phone is actually a laggard on this front? The chances are that everything post the iPhone 7 offers reasonable pace for the activities that lay users like us put it through
- The company promises increased battery life that is at last five hours more than the iPhone XR series, which itself was an improvement over the previous XS models. By the way, Apple promises this only for the iPhone Pro Max model. Methinks a simple 5K battery pack should do the trick
- Then there are those three eyes at the back of the phone offering wide, ultrawide and telephoto capabilities seamlessly. These were used by other brands such as the Huawei P30 Pro and the Galaxy Note 10 though Apple has nailed picture quality with Deep Fusion feature that takes the best features from nine different images that the phone automatically takes and merges using machine learning. So why not buy a camera instead if you are in the business of taking professional pictures?
- Apple says the facial unlocking is smarter now and the phone supports Wi-Fi 6 but there is silence on 5G carrier support, which some of the competitors have already implemented.
- And finally, the newest iPhone offers a slow-motion feature on the front-facing camera and at present one isn’t exactly sure what purpose this would serve. Unless of course, Apple plans to give a new meaning to the selfies and adding another word to the English lexicon – the Slowfie.
So, what would be our recommendation? Exactly what we have stated in the headline of this story. Take a pause and think again for the iPhone 11 series isn’t exactly the best invention after sliced bread. Wait and see what Tim Cooks up next September and if you must buy an iPhone, pick one from the XS or XR series and save some cash.
