Google Wants .google, .youtube Domains Added To Its Stockpile

Applies for 50 domain names in all, final listing will be published on 13th June.

Google has decided to take its brand name to a new level, as it has applied for as many as 50 top-level domains (TLDs) such as .google and .youtube, apart from extensions such as .docs and .lol, as part of an initiative to increase web suffixes beyond those used commonly. Apparently, the idea is to ensure that people can better relate to the company's products and genres, along with adding a dash of creativity. Google's Chief Internet Evangelist, Vint Cerf in his blog post further states that apart from offering a "...good experience for web users and site owners", the company will focus on abuse prevention and security loop holes relating to the use of these domains in the future.

The move comes as US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organisation, had approved the domain expansion last year, with the motive to support online innovation. Reports further suggest that after the exercise, which concluded on 30th May, ICANN has plans to make the list of applied domains extensions public on 13th June.
