The new update removes the earlier requirement of wiping the phone clean.
Here is great news for all you Android fans who dreamt of installing latest versions of the operating system without having to uninstall earlier versions. Alphanet Inc. (earlier known to us as Google) has now provided the option in, what is being seen by industry, as an important upgrade.
With the latest update (read about it on the Google Blog) also provides an alternative restore option. Now users can install new versions or restore older ones without having to delete everything on their Nexus device. Also, they do not have to worry about starting from scratch.
Google has made update images available for all supported Nexus devices (including Pixel C) which effectively means that users can upgrade without having to wait longer and also not having to worry about data loss in the process.
Of course, the concept isn’t really path breaking in any fashion as air images have been around for several years via third-party websites. Google’s first over-the-air (OTA) upgrades were done on the Android N Preview and from the looks of it, the company has no signs of stopping now. Users could revert to the older Marshmallow in case they found the bugs tough to handle.
Besides making it easier for users to upgrade or revert back to earlier versions of Android, Google’s latest move also means that reliance on third-party websites for making these transitions would cease. Looks like they’re taking Apple’s age-old theory of ‘keeping everything in the family’ quite seriously!
As for the burgeoning Android community, they need not feel inferior to Apple or Microsoft phone users in this department, as they need not fear upgrades or reverts resulting in data loss.
One wonders what iPhone users will say to this development? Would this major step taken by Google cause them to rethink about investing in a Nexus phone the next time round?
