Destined to launch on the 9th of September this year, Apple will not be announcing an all-new iPhone, but a refreshed one.

But this is not a refresh similar to the HTC One M9 where nothing changed for the good.

This year’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models are expected to take big leaps. And most of those leaps will emanate from internal hardware only.

Design

What we have seen so far from the long list of rumours and leaked images, it is pretty evident that the upcoming iPhone 6s models will not sport any cosmetic design changes. Its basically an Apple tradition and it also pays off massively for the design team as they do not have work on a new design from scratch, saving Apple a lot of monies. Indeed the design team will be scratching their heads on the iPhone 7 at this very moment.

From what we know, the Apple iPhone 6s will still sport the same protruding camera ring, but its just that the body will grow stronger. Keeping in mind all those leaked images, it is pretty clear that the body especially in the areas around the volume buttons have grown thicker. This should hopefully prevent the Bendgate scenario, but also makes the phones slightly thicker by 0.2 mm.

Display and Force Touch

Keeping all those analyst comments in mind and a few leaked images, it is clear that Apple will be utilizing Force Touch in a big way on the iPhone 6s smartphones. While Apple has ensured that Force Touch is already available on its new MacBook, refreshed MacBook Pros and its Apple Watch, the next best place to utilise this technology is clearly in the iPhone.

There are plenty of leaked images showing off the new display panels, and while they do look pretty similar, a lot has changed on the logic boards inside (not to mention the mounting points) to indicate that something new is coming.

Force Touch is expected to be used in a different way in the sense that it will be used to get to functions quicker by skipping on some steps. Like for example, a long press on Maps on a location will directly show directions to that location.

Camera

No, there’s not going to be a dual lens camera set up that will deliver DSLR quality imagery. Instead analysts and plenty of leaks showing off the chassis have indicated that we may simply see a bump up in the number of pixels from 8 to 12 MP.

Apple’s acquisition of LinX will change things a bit, but its pretty much unclear at the moment, how much will change for the iPhone 6s. We may see all of their depth-mapping and multi-aperture array tech being used in the iPhone 7 to the fullest. Still then, we can expect 4 K video to show up, thanks to the beefed up hardware.

Hardware Specifications

As of now the iPhone 6s models are rumoured to get a brand-new A9 chip and a hefty 2 GB of RAM.The chipset will utilize the 14 nm process and apart from power savings, will also deliver better graphics and improve the camera experience drastically.

Recent Rumours

Lastly, a recent rumour also points out to a new patent filing by Apple. The interesting patent filing points a Samsung-like edge display, but with a slightly different implementation.

Apple’s patent points to the use of virtual buttons on the side display of an upcoming iPhone. The side display will change according to the app open and will adapt according to what is being displayed on the main screen. Think short cuts to the music app with a sort of ticker on the side.

Indeed this is unlike Samsung, whose UI utilizes the bent corners and the edges of the display.

Clearly, this isn’t going to make it to the iPhone 6s, since there seems to be a lot of thought that needs to go into the same. While Samsung’s implementation of a edge display is extremely limited in nature on both the Samsung S6 edge and edge+ models, it may make better sense in a developer ecosystem that is very responsive to change.
