04th May 2015With the addition of G4, the Android flagship line-up is complete. Samsung, HTC, and LG are the names to watch out for when it comes to the top-end Android phones. LG was late to the game, but the Korean company has gone all guns blazing. Let's find out how its latest premium phone stacks up against the competition.
Design
Going by the press images, the G4's front looks a lot like the G3. The slightly curved replaceable back-panels come in gold, white, and grey. There are even textured panels to choose from. What really stands out is the genuine leather cover. In competition, the Galaxy S6 Edge has an eye-catching dual-edged screen. HTC One M9 has a metal-clad body. Talking strictly of aesthetics, HTC has an edge over the Korean compatriots.Display
The LG G4 boasts of 5.5" screen with the resolution of 2560x1440. That takes the pixel density to around 534 ppi. HTC's One M9 has a Full HD 5-inch screen pixels density of 441 ppi. Samsung, on the other hand has an incredibly sharp 5.1" panel with the pixel density of 557 ppi. Samsung's screen will have an edge over the competition, not because it packs-in more pixels, but the OLED screen type. Undoubtedly, LG makes impressive IPS panels. But, when it comes to the colour reproduction, IPS panels are nowhere near the OLED screens.Firepower
The LG G4 is powered by the Snapdragon 808 chip. The 64 bit hexa-core CPU is a mix of a dual-core and quad-core CPUs. It features 3 GB RAM and Adreno 418 GPU to handle gaming and multitasking. The HTC One M9 packs in the Snapdragon 810 chip, which considered as a step up from the Snapdragon 808. It features a quad-core processor maxed out at 2 GHz. The phone has Adreno 430 GPU and 3 GB RAM.
The Galaxy S6 Edge is based on Samsung's own Exynos 7420 SoC (System-on-Chip). It comprises of quad-core processor with highest clockspeed of 2.1 GHz. The S6 Edge features 3 GB RAM and Mali-T760MP8 GPU.
What it means is that all these phones take the overkill route when it comes to specifications. I don't believe in synthetic benchmarks, so can't comment much o the performance part.
Camera
LG's flagship phone sports a 16 megapixel camera with laser auto focus technology. Then, there's OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) for enhanced low-light photography.Samsung too has implemented Optical Image Stabilisation in its 16 megapixel camera assembly. So expect it to give stiff competition to LG.
HTC has finally given up on its "Ultrapixel" gimmick. It has finally added a proper 20.7 megapixel camera. Not much seems to have done to elevate low-light performance though.
Misc.
Both the HTC One M9 and LG G4 pack in 32 GB internal storage, with provision for expansion via a microSd card slot. Samsung's flagship lacks the microSD card slot. Obviously, the company wants to make extra money by charging premium for 64 and 128 GB versions.Software
On the software side, all three handsets run Android Lollipop. The G4 being the newest addition, comes with the latest ver 5.1. Each company has its own UI on top of Android. Off these, we find HTC's Sense software simple and elegant. On the other hand, LG's Optimus UX and Samsung's TouchWiz are still cluttered and somewhat garish.Battery
The LG G4 has 3000 mAh user-replaceable battery. To achieve sleek design, HTC and Samsung have gone with fixed batteries. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge packs in 2550 mAh pack. The HTC One M9 features a 2840 mAh battery.
