17th Jun 2014To gain market share, Microsoft wavered off software royalties on devices with up to 9-inch screen. In no time, budget smartphone makers such as Micromax, Karbonn, and LAVA partnered with Microsoft to jump on the Windows Phone bandwagon.
In just a few months, the numero uno domestic brand Micromax introduced two handsets - Canvas Win W121 and Canvas Win W092. Both the phones pack in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 200 chipset, which comprises of a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 1 GB RAM. Priced at Rs 9500, the W121 sports a typical Micromax design language.
The more affordable among the duo, the Canvas Win W092 looks OK at a first glance. Considering its Rs 6500 price tag, the device offers a good number of features such as a 4-inch IPS display, 5 megapixel rear camera, a 0.3 MP front-facing camera, 8 GB internal storage, and microSD card slot. If you look closely though, this Windows Phone 8.1 device sports Android navigation keys! Now, that’s definitely Nothing Like Anything! There are two possible explanations here:
1. Micromax might be using existing Android phone chassis for this low-cost handset. However, we don’t see how Microsoft would approve of this. For more details, we checked Microsoft official Windows Phone blog, and surprisingly it’s also showing the Win W092 with Android keys. So there’s a chance that Microsoft is going loosening its restrictions for Micromax.
2. The second possibility is that the guys at Micromax responsible for product images must have done a sloppy job. Someone at Micromax must have taken a product image of an existing phone, and superimposed Windows Phone interface there. Unfortunately, the fellow missed out the capacitive keys part. Hey, this story sounds more believable, doesn’t it?
We’ve asked Micromax to send PR images, now depending on what we receive now, we will update you guys about this weird incident.
Bonus content: Micromax's official Facebook page has embraced Metro UI, which is perfectly fine. However, the company has added 'Ubuntu' operating system logo to one of its Windows live tiles. That's strange considering that Ubuntu is a popular Linux distro considered as a free alternative to Microsoft's Windows platform.
