26th Nov 2013Tablets have been a mystery to me. After dissing the first iPad, I had to eat my words, as Apple's slate garnered tremendously-positive response. One thing is clear; useful or not, people are buying tablets. And if you too have decided to get one for yourself, what better time to make a purchase than Diwali? The pioneer of this market, Apple, has unveiled its next wave of iPads. For a change, Nokia too has unveiled a tablet under the Lumia brand. However, these gadgets will take a few months to reach the Indian market, and may not be within reach of the masses. So let's just check out what's available right now, at various price points.
Entry-Level
Asus MeMO Pad ME172V
Price: Rs 5900
The Asus MeMO Pad ME172V is probably the only sub 6k tablet from a reputed brand. It features a 7" display with pixel dimensions of 1024x600. The screen incorporates a 10-point multi-touch display that has LED back-lighting. The tablet is driven by a 1 GHz single-core CPU with a Mali 400 GPU. According to Asus, the slate's 4270 mAh Li-Po battery provides a battery backup time of 7 hours. It runs on Android 4.1, which isn't very new, but then, what more can you ask for Rs 5900?Google Nexus 7
Price: Rs 10,000
Apart from pure Android experience, it's the pixel-packed 7" IPS screen that makes the Nexus 7 stand out from the crowd. The display is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 3. The tablet is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset. The ULP Geforce GPU is pretty good at gaming. Other features include 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB internal storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 4325 mAh battery. Despite the fact that it lacks a microSD card slot, we think it's the best tablet you can get for Rs 10,000.Mid-Range
Apple iPad mini
Price: Rs 21,000
The iPad mini sports a 7.9" IPS screen with pixel dimensions of 1024x768. The tablet's aluminium body is a refreshing change from a horde of plasticky Android tablets in this category. It's powered by the previous-generation A5 chipset, and has a 5 MP camera. Other specs include 16 GB internal storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. Like any iDevice, the iPad mini lacks a memory expansion slot, which is Apple's way of ensuring optimal performance. The iPad mini 2 is not yet here, but if you can find one for a similar price, just buy it.
Samsung GALAXY Tab 3 311
Price: Rs 25,000
If you're looking for a mid-range tablet from the Android camp, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 3 311 is worth your consideration. The tablet features an 8-inch screen with pixel dimensions of 1280x800. It's powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and has 1.5 GB of RAM. For photography, there's a 5 megapixel snapper. Additionally, you get a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, 16 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, and 4450 mAh battery. Plus, I'm sure many will be glad to have full-phone functionality. The Tab 3 311 runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 out of the box, and is available for Rs 25,000.
High-end
Apple iPad 4
Starting from Rs 40,000
If you're ready to spend big, there's not a single Android tablet better than the iPad 4. The 9.7-incher features an impressive IPS panel with 2048x1536 pixels. The dual-core A6X chip with quad-core graphics makes sure all the games run smooth on it. Apart from that, you get a 5 MP rear camera, 1.2 MP front-facing snapper, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. The tablet is also compatible with Apple's latest iOS7. The iPad 4 base model is priced at Rs 40,000. You can choose the higher variant depending on your storage and connectivity requirements.
