12th Jun 2012Earlier this week, the planet Venus had transited against the Sun. If you're an astrology enthusiast who missed the opportunity to witness this rare phenomenon, better luck next time in 2117. Alternatively, you can view NASA's coverage of the event.
These images have been collected by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft that was launched in 2010. The SDO is operated by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and is on a five-year mission to study the sun. According to NASA, this observatory sends more than 1 TB of data about the sun everyday, which includes very high-quality images. Without further ado, here's the breathtaking video of the Venus transit, created by putting together multiple images of the six-hour event using time-lapse photography. You can download this clip and some great images by clicking this link - a couple of them have been added to our gallery at the bottom of this story.
