01st May 2017Vivo launched its latest selfie smartphone V5s in a Delhi event. Much like the V5, which was launched last year, the new phone comes with a whopping 20-megapixel front-facing camera. Priced at Rs 19,000, this handset offers the best front-facing camera as far as numbers are concerned. At the venue we got to spend some time with the handset, and here are the first impressions:Design and buildThe latest phone hasn't got any update in the design department. It sports a metal unibody design that takes cue from last generation iPhone. The fit and finish of the handset is impressive considering the phone's price tag. Vivo has worked towards achieving attention to detail. We also liked how the back slightly curves on its sides. The only gripe I have here is with the protruding camera lens. The front side doesn't have much character though. It has thick bezels and a home button. The latter looks like a tactile button, but is in fact a capacitive screen that also houses a fingerprint sensor. Like most handsets these days, the battery is not user accessible.DisplayThe V5s sports a 5.5-inch IPS In Pane Switching) LCD screen. It has HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels) leading to a pixel density of 267 ppi. Sure the pixel density is low, but colours and viewing angles of the phone are quite good.User experienceThe phone runs MediaTek's MT6750 chipset. The Vivo V5s comes with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage. While we would have loved to see Qualcomm's chipset on this one, the one from MediaTek gets the job done anyway. The Vivo V5s runs Android 6.0 out-of-the-box. The Chinese company's Funtouch OS 3.0 customisation runs on top. In its latest iteration, the Funtouch OS seems responsive. Vivo has also toned down colours a bit, which is a good thing. It comes with some neat features such as the blue light filer to reduce the eye-strain.SpecificationsThe V5s comes with a hybrid slot, which can be used for microSD card expansion or secondary SIM. It is a 4G phone with support for VoLTE. Other features include Wi-Fi, A-GPS (Assisted GPS), Bluetooth 4.0, and fingerprint sensor. The high point of the phone is its 20-megapixel front-facing camera. It features optics from Sony. For superior low-light shot, the handset is equipped with an LED that produces diffused light.Overall, the Vivo V5s is a good contender with its Rs 19,000 price tag. It especially appeals to the youth who prefers selfies over power and performance.
