02nd Nov 2015While we have been knowing 'fingerprint scanners' for years, their integration into smartphones seems to have now become a norm.
The range of usage have been endless with a fingerprint scanner integrated in a smartphone, however, the actual usage depends on how well the feature is integrated and to what extent users are actually adopting to this feature.
Most of the users having a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor are mainly using it to unlock the device. But, it looks like day-by-day, the range of usage is getting broader and broader.
While the answer to the question do we really need a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner is completely subjective, there seems to be a trend that is being hyped lately.
Once a premium feature is now seen almost in every recently launched smartphone. Surprisingly, there are companies like Xolo and Coolpad which have integrated the fingerprint sensor with smartphones under the Rs 10,000 range too.
Considering this, the actual usage of the fingerprint scanner in your smartphone depends greatly on how tech savvy you are.
But, yes, in a country like India where digital transformation is happening at a very fast rate, the number of tech savvy users might definitely not be less. However, we are yet to see a day when fingerprint scanners are used in our everyday lives apart from mere unlocking the device.
We definitely look forward to the days when we use fingerprint scanners on our smartphones to order products on e-commerce sites like Flipkart, for mobile banking and even to simply login to your email IDs without actually typing in the passwords.
We would definitely want a smartphone with a finger scanner, but only when the data is encrypted and also when the feature is like the Touch ID Finger Scanner that comes with Apple iPhones.
In short, why not use the feature when you can actually do a lot more than mere unlocking the device. You can scan devices and encrypt them with your fingerprint while also you would be able to digitally sign the documents easily. There are ample usages of a fingerprint scanner which is why the companies are integrating it with almost every new device that is being launched.
We definitely need fingerprint scanner, not as a premium feature but as a common way to transact and interact.
